Addressing Your Worn or Malfunctioning Hearing Aid

Even with diligent care and regular upkeep, the passage of time inevitably affects all technology, potentially leading to wear and tear on your hearing aids during normal use.

While opting for replacement might be the ideal solution in certain scenarios — offering a chance to upgrade your technology — there are several common repairs you can attempt if you encounter issues with one or both of your devices. Here are some quick remedies to try:

  1. Swap out the battery.
  2. Remove and reinsert the hearing aid.
  3. Employ a cleaning tool to clean the device.
  4. Replace the wax filter.
  5. Open and close the battery compartment.
  6. Ensure the battery compartment is clear of any obstructions.
  7. Verify your input settings.

What Causes Hearing Aids to Fail?

Hearing aids and their components are typically designed to withstand considerable wear and tear. In many cases, minor repairs can easily restore them to working order. However, most instances of breakage occur during accidental mishaps. This could involve inadvertently subjecting the devices to a cycle in the washing machine or an unintended plunge into a pool.

Leaving hearing aids exposed in accessible areas increases the risk of mishandling by children or pets. Additionally, if the devices are knocked onto the floor, they may be inadvertently sucked up by a vacuum cleaner. These scenarios represent worst-case situations in terms of device breakage. However, more commonly, natural wear and tear due to aging hardware or malfunction are the primary culprits behind hearing aid failures.
